Political Hot Spot

Yesterday, President Bush and Tony Blair admitted they made mistakes on Iraq. Bush said his "bring 'em on'' taunt to Iraqi insurgents was a big mistake. However, they carefully avoided setting a timetable for removing troops from Iraq.

"Meeting at a time when a new Iraqi unity government offers the promise of a way out of an unpopular war that has damaged their standings at home, Bush and Blair were remarkably reflective on some of the grievous mistakes that critics say has intensified anti-American sentiment in the Middle East."

He also cited the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal as ''the biggest mistake that's happened so far, at least from our country's involvement in Iraq ..."

Blair said he believed it was possible to meet new Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's goal of having Iraqi security forces in control of all of Iraq by the end of 2007.
''Listen, I want our troops out -- don't get me wrong,'' said Bush. ''But I also understand that it is vital that we do the job, that we complete the mission.''

They constantly have deadlines for when things are going to get done, but they never do. How do they know that this government is going to be more successful than the last one? It's all just a put on so that the American people think things are being done. If you constantly hear in the news that something is going to be done by June 1, when that day rolls around and they stop talking about it, you just assume something was accomplished. However, nothing ever gets accomplished. Although the government will probably fail and the troops will be stuck in Iraq for a long period of time, Bush has finally admitted some mistakes. At least this is a step in the right direction.

On top of all of this, Hayden was confirmed.

wonder how they feel about the marines massacring innocent, unarmed iraqis? does that sound like progress? will they apologize for that? words are hollow- actions speak louder than words.

politiques usa - thanks for the link. Bush tells so many lies, it would take the rest of his term to apologize for all of them. But I doubt he ever will.

betmo - so true. The Bush administration has constantly said one thing and done another. I doubt they'll ever apologize for hurting innocent Iraqi's. Whereever I read about the death toll in Iraq it's always 2,400 Americans and many thousand Iraqi's. There's never a specific number even for how many were hurt or killed. In one place, I read that 100,000 were killed. I don't know if this is accurate, but there should be some count and recognition of the innocent Iraqi's who died in this pointless war.

When Bush landed on that aircraft carrier (after delaying it from reaching port for a day and a half so he could have his dumb ass macho boy photo op)and declared "Mission Accomplished", I knew then he didn't have a clue and many were going to die because of that. I never watched any program he was on after that...be it the stench of the union...anything. I will watch his impeachment, or his funeral, whichever comes first, with unbridled joy you can not imagine!!

The 100,000 figure is the result of the Lancet survey:

From wikipedia: A survey published in the Lancet on October 29, 2004 estimated the civilian and military casualties of the 2003 invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq to be 98,000 (95% confidence interval: 8000 to 194000) more than would have been expected without the invasion... To date, this is the only serious scientific attempt to estimate the excess mortality as a result of the invasion.

The survey was sponsored by the Center for International Emergency Disaster and Refugee Studies, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD, USA (authors L Roberts PhD, G Burnham MD) and the Department of Community Medicine, College of Medicine, Al-Mustansiriya University, Baghdad, Iraq.

The relative risk of death due to the 2003 invasion and occupation was estimated by comparing mortality in the 17.8 months after the invasion with the 14.6 months preceding it. The study makes the controversial conclusion that: "Violent deaths were widespread, reported in 15 of 33 clusters, and were mainly attributed to coalition forces. Most individuals reportedly killed by coalition forces were women and children" and "Making conservative assumptions, we think that about 100,000 excess deaths, or more have happened since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Violence accounted for most of the excess deaths and air strikes from coalition forces accounted for most violent deaths".

    ..........

The Lancet is one of the oldest and most respected peer-reviewed medical journals in the world, published weekly by the Lancet Publishing Group, part of Reed Elsevier. The Lancet is considered to be one of the "core" general medical journals; the others being the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the British Medical Journal. (end Wikipedia info)

It has been 18+ months since the study was published...

wow. It's scary to think how many people have died since the survey was taken. I'm surprised that survey was allowed to get out after what happened to the news reporter who took pictures of the coffins of American soldiers. The secrecy of the Bush administration is disgusting, especially how they cover up the loss of human life.

...I agree with most of the sentiments described herewith,... with the exception of "Unhappy American"s facts. The "Mission Accomplished" banner was of the Aircraft Carrier itself and hung up to celebrate the accomplish-ment of having survived 8 months at sea with hardly a ports call. I am an ex-sailor and the hanging of celebratory banners is a Naval tradition that is decades old. The fact that Messieur Bush decided to use it as a backdrop was a political calculation, not an administration's declaration. To his detriment he allowed it to be interpreted as such by the opposing party.
I think Bush can be bashed hard enough with salient facts. Interprative conjecture is hardly needed, dont you think? (.. but this is just a humble Libertarian's view... bash away:)
