On Monday night, Bush attempted to do what he does best: distract the American people and make them believe that he is actually doing something. He tried to draw attention away from the domestic spying incident and Valerie Plame incident. He tried to come out strong and tell the American people that he was out working for their own good. And of course, that he wants to legalize 11 million illegal immigrants just because they're good people.
Tuesday, the New York Times put it this way:
"But a day after Mr. Bush delivered a nationally televised address on the issue from the Oval Office, there was little immediate evidence that he had bridged the deep divide in his own party or rallied public opinion sufficiently to break the impasse.
"Republicans said their party was already facing a difficult midterm election. They said the party would suffer if the president successfully advanced his proposal, which they said diverged with public opinion and carried the risk of alienating much of the Republican base.
"Republicans said Mr. Bush's plan would be viewed as amnesty by many Americans, even if illegal immigrants had to pay fines and meet other requirements, because they would still be rewarded with legal status."
His plan is amnesty! That is why people are viewing it as such. The American people seem to be finally waking up and realizing hey! why do they get easy entry into America? Even though Bush will try and tell us that we are all immigrants, taht's true. But we're all LEGAL immigrants. We all went through the immigration process at some time in our family history. Deport the illegals and let them come over here the legal way. And get back to domestic spying. Stop trying to side track Americans with issues that you think you're strong on, Mr. President (referring to Dick Cheney of course).
Here are some interesting statistics from the NY Times.

the repubs and conservatives think that the american public have short memories. they think that sound bites work all of the time and that by the time november roles around- rove's strategy of smear campaigns and smoke screen techniques will clear the way like they did in 2000 and 2004. the ace up their sleeves is of course the unfair and illegal voting practices that have handed so many states over to the repubs. so, for the 'president' to attempt to distract the public and put a band aid on the immigration issue isn't that far fetched. unfortunately, it is par for the course for these unimaginative people.

IT'S SOCIAL AMNESIA :)
Bush will put national guard on the border, then he'll put the US army, then people from Mexico will vote for a government close to Chavez.
We are isolating ourselves: keep your friends close and your enemies closer :)

betmo - on another site, this spying situation was being compared to 1984 by George Orwell. They have a "Records Department" that edits past information to make it agree with what the Party or Big Brother (their leader) has said. They expect the people to just accept the new information and forget the old. In one particular example, they say one day that the chocolage ration has been decreased. Then the next day, they say that the chocolate ration is as good as always and the people don't object. They call it "double think". (Remind you of the whole I said this, no I said this from Bush about the domestic spying? or about WMD for that matter? Also, in 1984 they have telescreens that watch every move you make. (somewhat like domestic spying?) The resemblance is uncanny.
Politiques USA - right on. Since Bush can't change old newspapers to agree with him, he has resorted to distracting the American people. and yes! keep your enemies closer.

hmm, I not sure how likely that is. Mexico has rich and poor -- but not much of a middle class -- which is the direction this country is moving in. Another BIG tax cut for the wealthy was just approved by Congress, yet there isn't much about it in the news... certainly no big outcry by any means.
From Wikipedia: Mexico still needs to overcome many structural problems as it strives to modernize its economy and raise living standards. Ongoing economic concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution (top 20% of income earners account for 55% of income)...
We have free elections here, yet people keep voting for the Republican party... who is moving us in this direction...
I think this is the Republican plan to deal with illegal immigration -- make the US more like Mexico by eliminating the Middle class. That way Americans will be forced to accept the low paying jobs the Mexicans are coming here for. When Americans have no choice but to accept those jobs (because they'll starve and die if they don't) then there will no longer be any reason for Mexicans to come here.
Ellie: Obviously you've put a lot of work into this blog since last I visited... a new look and several new posts! Looks good!

that is why there is so much 'classifying' and reclassifying of information- i am sure that they are keeping stuff hidden and possibly even destroying information. the fraudulent voting systems aside, i don't understand why anyone in their right mind would vote republican- and i am not really sure why anyone is voting democrat these days. i just don't understand people.

I definately agree. The middle class is suffereing greatly. The national debt is now so high that Bush has to remove social programs, which was probably his motive for letting the debt get so out of hand. In his State of the Union he said that he would eliminate 70 to 80 social programs. These are the benefits given to the working middle class. When they are gone, the middle class will become the poor and the situation in America will be very much like that in Mexico.
w-dervish - thanks, I'm glad you like the new look.
betmo - the truth means nothing to these people. They say whatever will get them more money. It constantly amazes me how poeple vote for the republicans and how they believe they are doing the right thing. people really are brainwashed.

Yes, I believe you are right.
The following is an excerpt from "Worse than Watergate" by John W. Dean:
The Bush-Cheney hidden agenda I have focused on relates to their national security policies, given their critical importance. Equally worthy of attention is their hidden agenda to end federal entitlement programs by running up budget-busting deficits while hiking military spending, which is bleeding the federal treasury and will ultimately result in there simply being no money available to pay for social programs after this administration is gone.
